Two are fitted to MGA 1600 and Mk II cars. One on each front brake caliper. The spring action from this retainer exerts pressure on the pads to prevent noise from vibration, while allow the pads to engage and disengage the brake disk.

#14. Stiffener – Door Casing. I thought this was going to trip up a lot of people, but almost everyone knew two of these were fitted to all Roadsters.

#15. Rubber – Engine Mounting (Front R/H). Most people recognized this as a motor mount. But only one per MGA 1500, 1600 and MkII is used as the right-hand mount. The Twin Cam was fitted with different mount on this side. While the Deluxe car used the pushrod motor, it was technically fitted to a leftover Twin Cam chassis, the Deluxe also used the right-hand Twin Cam motor mount.

#16. Pin – Bonnet Latch. Everyone recognized that one of these was fitted to all MGAs.

#17. Cap – Master Cylinder Reservoir. Just to make it interesting, this item was photographed upside down. It was fitted to all MGAs except Twin Cam and Deluxe, which utilized a pair of Dunlop master cylinders with different reservoir caps.

#18. Strap – Fixing. This retaining strap fits the two large gauges on all MGAs except Twin Cam tachometer. This perplexed me as I thought the only difference in a Twin Cam tach was that it displays a higher rpm and redline. I removed the tach and speedo in my Twin Cam and did indeed see a slightly different strap. Well, it really looks like the regular strap, but has a bend in each leg of the strap. I’m still not sure why that was necessary. I welcome your opinion!

#19. Bracket – Rear Bumper Mounting (R/H). There is a left and a right side to these bumper brackets. I had to look under a car to see which one I had selection for the quiz!

#20. Gasket – Water Valve. One per car on all MGAs, except Twin Cams, that were fitted with the optional heater.

#21. Hose – Bottom Radiator. I thought this might stump people as this lower radiator hose only fits the Twin Cam model. But you knew what it was!

#22. Spindle – Oil Pump Driving. One is fitted to all MGAs except the Twin Cam. Some thought it might have been the distributor drive.

#23. Socket – Side Curtain. This lever fits on the throttle shaft of all MGAs and only one is required.

#25. Lever – Boot Lock Actuating. One is used on all MGAs in the left/rear corner of the trunk (boot) to facilitate releasing the latch. The front lever is significantly different.

This was a fun quiz to put together, and I hope all who participated enjoyed the challenge. The MGA is truly more complex than it first appears. To restore one to original standards, correctly identifying parts becomes a necessity. The factory parts manual can be a tremendous help, as can many of our parts suppliers. And if you’re still not sure about a certain part, I bet Barney Gaylord will know the answer!

Safety Fast!

We continue with the answers and descriptions of the recent MGA/Magnette Parts Quiz.
